Boss Type: Mr. Invisible
Here’s another wonderful story about a boss that just isn’t there when you need him. Poor Craig describes his first day of work at an exciting, new job:
Fresh out of university, I was thrilled to receive a supervisory job working in a beautiful park about 2 hours out of my home town. Speaking with my new boss over the phone, he gave me directions on how to first get to the park, and then find the Park Office. He was very direct about what time to meet him.
“Start work at the Park Office on Monday at 8am SHARP!” he barked at me over the phone.
So, Monday morning, I got up at 5am. I rubbed my bleary eyes, ate breakfast, jumped in my already packed car, and drove the two hours to the park. Once there, I followed his detailed directions to the Park Office, just in time for 8am. Other park staff were arriving as well, and looked at me oddly.
Once I was inside, I said to the receptionist, “Hi, I’m supposed to meet Frank here at 8am.”
“You are?” she asked.
“Yes.” I replied, eagerly. “Today is my first day of work, and Frank told me to meet him here at 8am.”
“Well,” she said awkwardly, “Frank is on vacation this week.”
“What? Did he leave any instructions for me?”
“No. He didn’t say anything about you.”
So, that’s how my new job started. With the worst welcome ever. I only ever really saw the guy about three times that summer. As it turned out, that was a good thing.
